About Luna

Luna Spiegel

Eighteen, from Lüneburg, and already sharing a stage with the NDR Bigband — Luna Spiegel is a trombonist whose career is still being written, one festival at a time.

Trombone Piano Trumpet Drums

Biography

Luna Spiegel picked up the trombone in Lüneburg, where she grew up and still returns to play — she's been part of the city's Stadtfest lineup every year since 2018, the same year she joined the Bläserklasse (wind class) at the Gymnasium Wilhelm-Raabe-Schule. What might have stayed a school-band instrument became a serious pursuit fast: by her early teens she was already working through the regional competition circuit and playing festival stages beyond Lüneburg, from the hometown Musikuss festival to the International Jazz Festival for Children and Young People in Leipzig.

The current chapter runs through Hamburg's Hochschule für Musik und Theater (HfMT). Luna completed a Jungstudium in Jazz Trombone there in 2024–25, moved into the school's Inklusion @HfMT (Art plus) certificate program for 2025–26, and starts a full Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trombone at HfMT this October — supported throughout by her current trombone teachers, Prof. Dan Gottshall and Prof. Joachim Preu, and, in earlier years, by Steffen Happel, Mathis Wroblewski, and Ken Drombrowski.

Alongside her studies, Luna has held trombone chairs in youth jazz orchestras across four German states — Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, and as a substitute in NRW — and stepped in as a soloist with the NDR Bigband, including a two-week internship there in April 2025. In April 2026 she toured Shanghai with the Landesjugendjazzorchester Hamburg for the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, one stop in a run of international projects that has also taken her to Paris and, through a school exchange, to Cáceres in Spain.

None of that has come at the expense of range: she still plays trumpet, drums, and piano, fronts the pop-rock band Rockytrio alongside her jazz work, and picks up chairs across Hamburg's big-band scene as a regular substitute. At eighteen, she reads less like someone arriving at a career and more like someone already several stops into one — with the biggest step, a full Bachelor's degree, still ahead of her.

Beyond the trombone

More than the trombone

Off stage, Luna is a committed concertgoer — the kind of listener who shows up to hear other people's gigs, not just play her own — alongside photography and reading. From 2024 to 2026, she also sat on the Musikschulbeirat (music school advisory board) of the Musikschule der Hansestadt Lüneburg: a small but real seat in shaping how music education works in her hometown, not just benefiting from it. A fitting sideline for someone who has spent her whole youth moving between being taught and starting to help decide how teaching happens.
